ABB INSUMMCU2

I. Basic Information

ABB INSUMMCU2 is a high-end motor monitoring & control unit for intelligent motor management system and an integrated motor protection controller exclusively matched with ABB low-voltage switchgear. The product line consists of MCU1 (Economy Version) and MCU2 (Full-function Version). Featuring dual acquisition of current and voltage signals, the MCU2 integrates one/three-phase AC motor start-stop control, full-range electrical protection, operating parameter monitoring and remote bus communication into one single device.
Adopting split modular construction (main control body + current transformer assembly + optional voltage acquisition module), the unit housing is made of glass-fiber reinforced flame-retardant PC material (UL94 V-0 halogen-free, RAL7012 grey). It is natively compatible with ABB MNS draw-out low-voltage switchgear, connects to the upper System 800xA/DCS monitoring platform via INSUM ICU communication networking. Serving as the core on-site measurement & control component for low-voltage fans, water pumps and compressor motors in power plants, chemical plants, water treatment facilities and metallurgical works, it supports 24/7 continuous maintenance-free operation.

III. Key Features

Full-range Electrical Motor Protection (Core Advantage of MCU2)

Integrated inverse-time overload protection, instantaneous short-circuit protection, phase-loss protection, three-phase unbalance protection, under/overvoltage protection, locked-rotor protection and earth leakage protection. Supported by dual current & voltage sampling (voltage measurement unavailable on MCU1), it effectively prevents motor burnout caused by missing phase and equipment damage from grid fluctuation, with graded fault alarm and tripping functions.

Programmable Multi-mode Motor Startup Logic

Supports direct-on-line, star-delta, three-contactor and reduced-voltage startup. Pre-programmed internal logic eliminates extra intermediate relays, simplifies secondary wiring inside cabinets and reduces potential wiring faults.

Full-parameter Online Monitoring & Fault Tracing

Real-time collection of three-phase current, three-phase voltage, active/reactive power, power factor, cumulative running hours and start-stop counts. Instant fault snapshot is automatically saved upon failure to accurately root-cause overcurrent, undervoltage or phase-loss issues.

Dual-path Parameter Configuration for Convenient Maintenance

Protection setting values configurable via local pushbuttons or bulk remote parameter download from DCS, greatly improving commissioning efficiency for large-scale complete projects.

Integrated INSUM Networking for Centralized Intelligent Control

All motors within a full set of MNS cabinets are centrally collected to upper monitoring system over INSUM bus, enabling remote start/stop, remote parameter modification and remote fault alert to satisfy centralized control requirements of power plant auxiliary equipment.

High-reliability Maintenance-free Industrial Design

Fanless, onboard-battery-free fully enclosed flame-retardant enclosure with dustproof and moistureproof property, applicable to dusty and oily substation conditions and requires no regular maintenance for long-term continuous service.

Excellent Interchangeability for Spare Part Replacement

Direct in-situ replacement of aged MCU2 on existing MNS cabinets without modifying secondary circuits or internal wiring, ideal for renovation and upgrade of legacy low-voltage distribution systems.

IV. Working Principle

  1. Power-on Self-test & Initialization: After energized by DC24V/AC230V auxiliary supply, the unit executes CPU self-check, CT circuit verification, bus port diagnosis and parameter loading; it switches to standby mode once all self-check items pass.
  2. Primary Circuit Electrical Sampling: Built-in through-type CT samples three-phase current; dedicated voltage terminals on MCU2 collect bus three-phase voltage with real-time A/D conversion.
  3. Local DI Signal Acquisition: Collect digital signals including emergency stop, local/remote switchover and auxiliary contact feedback of contactors, then store data into internal registers.
  4. Logical Calculation & Protection Judgement: Compare real-time current and voltage against preset protection thresholds; inverse-time action for overload, instantaneous tripping for short-circuit and delayed shutdown for phase loss, meanwhile trigger DO output to cut off contactor control loop.

  1. Start-stop Control Output: Upon start/stop commands from local panel or remote bus, MCU2 outputs DO signals following pre-defined startup sequence to drive corresponding contactors for star-delta or direct-on-line operation.
  2. Local Data Storage & Bus Upload: Real-time operating parameters are cached under normal running conditions; instantaneous fault data is saved upon abnormality. Process data and fault codes are transmitted to ICU gateway via INSUM bus and further forwarded to upper DCS platform.
  3. LED Status Indication: Front-panel LEDs continuously display running, fault, trip and communication failure status for intuitive on-site condition check.
  4. Cyclic Steady Operation: Repeats continuous sampling-calculation-control-transmission cycles under normal status to guarantee safe round-the-clock operation of low-voltage motors.
