Description
ABB PVD164A2059 3BHE014340R2059
I. Basic Information
Product Positioning: Original ABB-manufactured product from Switzerland, a dedicated AC800PEC excitation processor board and redundant PROFIBUS‑DP fieldbus communication module. It serves as a matched COB master control component for UNITROL5000/6000 generator excitation systems and a critical spare part installed inside excitation regulator cubicles of thermal power plants, hydropower stations and captive power plants, supporting 24/7 non-stop redundant operation. All variants of the PVD164A series feature compatible rack slot dimensions for direct drop-in replacement, designed as an alternative to legacy RLM01 (3BDZ000398R1) fieldbus modules.
- Brand: ABB Power Grids | Origin: Switzerland

- Onboard Configuration: Backplane gold-finger edge connector, dual galvanically isolated PROFIBUS-DP terminal blocks, three-color LED indicators for status/fault/communication, and relay terminals for fault alarm output.
II. Technical Specifications
(1) Electrical Parameters
- Power Supply: Wide-range DC input 9~36V (nominal 24VDC±10% standard cabinet control power); maximum rated power consumption ≤22W; built-in hardware protection against reverse polarity, surge and short-circuit faults.
- Fieldbus Interface: Dual galvanically isolated redundant PROFIBUS-DP bus with auto-adaptive baud rate ranging from 2.4kbps to 12Mbps; supports bidirectional protocol conversion between single-bus and dual redundant-bus modes to enable data exchange between master controller, local I/O boards and pulse firing boards.
- Analog & Digital Acquisition: Onboard acquisition circuits designed for generator terminal AC100V voltage, CT secondary AC5A current and 4~20mA excitation feedback signals; passive dry-contact relay output for fault alarm.
- Processor: Dedicated AC800PEC DSP chip with onboard FLASH memory; excitation parameters and bus configuration data are permanently retained after power loss; online firmware upgrade available via serial port.
(2) Environmental Parameters
- Operating Temperature: -20℃~+65℃ for continuous long-term cabinet operation; Storage Temperature: -40℃~+85℃.
- Humidity: 5%~95% RH non-condensing; compliant with IEC61000 EMC industrial immunity standards to withstand harsh site conditions including excitation harmonics, dust and condensed moisture inside cubicles.
III. Key Features
1. Closed-loop AVR Master Calculation for Excitation Control
2. Redundant DP Bus Link Switchover
Seamless automatic switchover to standby channel upon single DP bus failure; short-circuit on one bus channel will not interrupt full-cabinet communication, eliminating single-point downtime risks of old single-bus excitation systems and ideal for redundant retrofit upgrades.
3. Full-circuit Hardware Self-diagnosis
4. Cross-version Wiring-free Drop-in Replacement
5. Multi-protocol Interconnection
IV. Working Principle
- Power-on Self-test: After 24VDC energization, the board runs self-inspection for onboard power supply, DSP processor, DP transceiver circuits and sampling channels, and completes backplane communication handshake with UNS2881 measurement boards and UNS0881 pulse firing boards.
- Signal Acquisition: Real-time collection of analog signals including generator terminal voltage, stator current and rotor excitation current.
- Calculation & Command Generation: Executes closed-loop AVR calculation against setpoints, generates phase-shift control commands and transmits them to UNS0881 pulse boards via DP bus.
- Bus Data Exchange: Cyclically uploads field measurement data to unit DCS over dual DP buses and receives remote setpoint parameters from upper system; automatic redundant switching triggered once one bus channel fails.
- Fault Handling: Fault location is flagged immediately upon defective sampling/bus/downstream boards; communication of faulty channel is isolated while remaining circuits keep normal operation, accompanied by simultaneous relay alarm contact activation.
V. Application Scenarios
(1) Excitation for Turbo-generators in Thermal Power Plants (Primary Application)
(2) Excitation for Medium & Large Hydraulic Generating Units
(3) Captive Power Plants in Steel, Coking & Refining Industries
(4) Combined-cycle Gas Turbine & Biomass Power Plants
Matching component for full-series UNITROL static excitation systems.
Version Differentiation
- PVD164A2059|3BHE014340R2059 (Current R2059 Version): Dual redundant DP design with enhanced EMC performance, universally applicable for new unit construction and existing plant renovation projects.
- Early standard PVD164A with Rxxxx suffix: Single-channel DP bus without redundant function, still in service on legacy aging excitation units.
