1. Product Overview

WOODWARD 8440-2050 (belonging to the easYgen-3200-5/P1 model within the easYgen-3000 series) is an intelligent grid paralleling controller specially designed for generator sets. Serving as the core measurement and control unit for diesel and gas generator units, it integrates unit start-stop logic, voltage and frequency regulation, synchronous paralleling, load sharing, comprehensive electrical and engine protection, as well as remote operation, maintenance and monitoring functions. It supports multiple control modes including standalone unit operation, parallel grid connection of multiple generator sets, and automatic mains backup switching, compatible with 50Hz/60Hz industrial power grids.

Equipped with a high-precision true RMS sampling circuit, this controller accurately measures three-phase voltage, current, rotating speed and other operating parameters, and supports various industrial communication protocols such as CANopen, Modbus and Ethernet. Users can perform local parameter configuration and status inspection via its built-in color LCD screen, or conduct batch configuration, fault waveform recording and remote commissioning using the Woodward ToolKit host software. Certified with CE, UL, ABS and other authoritative approvals, it is widely deployed in critical power supply scenarios including power plant standby power sources, data centers, oil & gas stations, vessels and municipal emergency power supplies. It is commonly used for spare part replacement of legacy generator control systems and automation upgrading projects of power supply systems.

2. Hardware Structure and Composition

2.1 High-precision AC Sampling and Rotational Speed Acquisition Unit

It features isolated three-phase voltage and current AC sampling circuits adopting true RMS measurement technology, which effectively suppresses grid harmonic interference and precisely collects parameters including generator and mains three-phase line voltage, phase current, power, power factor and frequency. A dedicated acquisition channel for magnetoelectric speed sensors is configured to monitor engine rotational speed in real time and realize rapid tripping protection against overspeed and underspeed faults. Its frequency measurement range covers 40~85Hz, compatible with standard 50Hz and 60Hz grid conditions. It comes with 3 configurable analog input channels and 2 analog output channels supporting standard ±10V, 4~20mA signals, enabling external connection to temperature and oil pressure transmitters for engine condition monitoring and drive control of speed governing actuators.

2.2 Digital I/O Logic Control Unit

The board is equipped with multiple electrically isolated digital terminals, including 16 externally configurable digital inputs and 12 relay digital outputs, which can be flexibly programmed for process logics such as engine start/stop, pre-lubrication, fault alarm, closing/tripping of generator and mains circuit breakers, and synchronism interlock. The relay contacts are rated for resistive loads and can directly drive intermediate relays and audible & visual alarms. Input channels accept 12/24VDC active and passive signals. Electrical isolation between strong and weak current circuits prevents accidental start/stop and false protection actions caused by electromagnetic interference from on-site frequency converters and high-voltage equipment.

2.3 Human-Machine Interface and Parameter Storage Unit

The front panel integrates a color LCD display and soft function keys supporting more than ten languages for switching. It real-time displays operating data including unit voltage, current, frequency, active/reactive power, rotational speed, fault alarms and grid paralleling status. Multi-level password permission management is adopted to prevent unauthorized modification of process parameters. A battery-backed non-volatile memory onboard stores over 300 fault events, operation records and grid paralleling logs, retaining parameters and historical data permanently after power failure. Equipped with an embedded real-time clock, it accurately records fault occurrence time to facilitate maintenance troubleshooting and root cause tracing.

2.4 Multi-protocol Communication Expansion Unit

It integrates multiple communication interfaces including CANopen, RS485 (Modbus RTU), Ethernet and USB. The CAN bus connects to the engine ECU and complies with the SAE J1939 protocol to read engine operating data such as oil pressure, coolant temperature and fault codes. It also realizes load balancing parallel control for up to 32 synchronously grid-connected generator sets with automatic load distribution. The Ethernet interface connects to SCADA monitoring systems to realize remote four-telemetry functions, parameter downloading and remote fault uploading. The USB interface is used for local program upload/download and configuration backup, meeting the demand for centralized remote management of plant-wide power supply systems.

2.5 Panel Embedded Mounting Structure Unit

Designed for standard cabinet panel cutout embedded installation, the front panel achieves IP65 protection against dust and condensation inside control cabinets, while the rear wiring area is rated IP20. The integrated sealed plastic enclosure adopts three-proof conformal coating on circuit boards with wide-temperature industrial-grade hardware design. The series features full backward compatibility in both hardware and software, allowing direct on-site replacement of legacy easYgen controllers of the same specification without extensive modification to existing sensors and wiring circuits, greatly shortening on-site renovation and commissioning cycles.

4. Product Functions and Features

Intelligent Parallel Load Sharing for Multiple Units Ensures Stable and Reliable Redundant Power Supply

Relying on the CAN bus, up to 32 generator sets can operate synchronously on the grid with precise balanced distribution of active and reactive loads. The system automatically starts and stops standby units according to grid load, and supports bus tie switch and bidirectional mains switching logic. It rapidly switches power supply to generators upon mains undervoltage or loss, and smoothly synchronizes back to the mains upon power restoration to avoid power outages for critical loads.

Dual Comprehensive Protection for Engine and Generator Prevents Severe Equipment Damage

It integrates more than 20 hardware and software protection functions including overspeed, underspeed, overvoltage, undervoltage, overfrequency, underfrequency, overcurrent, reverse power, three-phase unbalance, excitation fault, low oil pressure and high coolant temperature. The controller immediately trips and shuts down the unit, latches fault codes and triggers remote alarms once a fault occurs, effectively preventing catastrophic failures such as generator burnout and engine cylinder scuffing, complying with high-reliability power safety standards for data centers, vessels and other facilities.

High-precision True RMS Sampling Delivers Stable Measurement Under Distorted Harmonic Grids

Adopting true RMS voltage and current sampling algorithms, it resists harmonic interference generated by frequency converters and non-linear loads to accurately measure electrical parameters under distorted grid conditions. It ensures precise adjustment of phase, frequency and voltage differences during synchronous paralleling, eliminating impulse short circuits and unit oscillation caused by asynchronous grid connection.

Multi-protocol Networking Supports Intelligent Centralized Remote Operation & Maintenance for the Whole Plant

Compatible with mainstream industrial communication protocols, it enables rapid parameter copying via local USB for batch commissioning of multiple units, as well as remote start/stop, parameter modification, real-time operating data collection and proactive fault uploading via Ethernet and RS485 connected to host monitoring systems. Event logs can be remotely exported and archived to realize unattended centralized power station management.

Multi-level Access Permission & Mass Event Logging Meet Power Supply Safety Compliance Audit Requirements

Administrator, maintenance and operator multi-level password permissions prevent malicious tampering of critical grid paralleling and protection parameters. The local memory stores over 300 timestamped records of operating events, alarms and operations, enabling complete traceability of fault root causes and personnel operations to satisfy safety compliance audit requirements for power and maritime industries.

Wide-temperature Dust-proof Industrial Design Enables Long-term Maintenance-free Stable Operation in Harsh Conditions

The IP65 dustproof and waterproof front panel is suitable for outdoor local control cabinets, ship engine rooms, oil & gas fields with dusty and high-humidity environments. Featuring fanless natural convection cooling and three-proof PCB coating, the product boasts long MTBF. Regular inspection of wiring tightness is sufficient to guarantee continuous stable operation.
