Description
1. Product Overview
ABB NDCO-03, part number 3BSE017193R1, is a multi-protocol gateway communication option card matched with ABB Advant / 800xA control systems, fully compatible with AC800M and Advant Master controllers. It serves as a dedicated gateway communication unit for protocol interworking of multi-vendor equipment and cross-bus data interaction.
Equipped with an independent multi-core communication processing chip, the module integrates multiple hardware interfaces including PROFIBUS-DP, RS485/232 serial port and 100M Ethernet. It can run up to 4 industrial communication protocols simultaneously, realizing bidirectional data forwarding, protocol conversion and centralized data collection between DCS controllers, third-party PLCs, frequency converters, smart instruments and servo motion controllers. Built with complete bus fault diagnosis, data verification and automatic link reconnection mechanisms, it adopts 24VDC isolated power supply and full-interface electrical isolation. Featuring industrial wide-temperature hardware and IP20 indoor protection, it has obtained CE, UL and ABS marine explosion-proof certifications. The card contains no mechanical wearable parts, supporting online configuration modification and real-time communication link monitoring. It is widely applied to networking of multi-brand equipment, protocol compatibility renovation of legacy systems, and projects for accessing data of third-party instruments and inverters to DCS in thermal power, chemical, metallurgy, paper and offshore platform industries.
2. Hardware Structure and Composition
2.1 Multi-Protocol Parallel Communication Processing Unit
A dedicated independent communication processor independently schedules timing of multiple buses without occupying controller CPU resources. It can process data of three groups of links (Ethernet, PROFIBUS-DP, serial port) in parallel, completing data packaging, parsing, protocol translation and variable mapping, and supporting cyclic real-time data exchange as well as acyclic parameter reading/writing and equipment diagnosis reading.
2.2 Multi-Channel Isolated Communication Interface Unit
Three groups of independent hardware communication interfaces with full electrical isolation protection are arranged on the board:
- 1-channel 10/100M adaptive Ethernet RJ45 port, supporting Modbus TCP and Profinet;
- 1-channel standard PROFIBUS-DP RS485 bus interface, compatible with DP-V0 / DP-V1;
- Multiplexed isolated RS232/RS485 serial port, supporting Modbus RTU, SPA and MPI;Surge absorption and current limiting protection are built into the interfaces to block potential difference and frequency converter interference from external equipment flowing back to the controller backplane.
2.3 Status Diagnosis LED Indication Unit
Multiple groups of two-color status LEDs are arranged on the panel, corresponding to power PWR, Ethernet LINK/ACT, PROFIBUS bus RUN/FAULT, serial port TX/RX respectively. Steady on, flashing and extinguished states distinguish normal power supply, data transceiving, bus breakage, communication timeout and address conflicts. Fault codes are synchronously uploaded to DCS to generate SOE event records.
2.4 Backplane Docking & Isolated Power Supply Unit
The card adopts standard slot plug-in installation inside the controller, realizing high-speed data interaction with the main control CPU via the internal controller backplane bus. It accepts external 24VDC DC input, with built-in isolated power conversion circuit integrating four levels of hardware protection (overvoltage, undervoltage, reverse polarity and short-circuit). Power clutter and transient surges will not cause communication link interruption.
2.5 Standardized Industrial Card Housing Unit
Flame-retardant V0 grade high-temperature resistant PCB with reinforced component layout, compact card size fitting controller slots. Gold-plated backplane contact pins resist oxidation and corrosion. The fully electronic design without moving mechanical parts requires zero routine wear maintenance, adapting to long-term constant-temperature continuous operation in sealed control cabinets.

4. Product Functions and Features
Multi-protocol parallel gateway conversion breaks data barriers of multi-brand equipment
Up to 4 different industrial communication protocols can run simultaneously. As a transfer gateway between DCS and third-party frequency converters, PLCs, instruments and servos, it eliminates the need for additional independent protocol converters, simplifies hardware layout inside cabinets and reduces system procurement costs.
Full-interface electrical isolation greatly improves communication stability under complex working conditions
Ethernet, DP bus and serial ports are all independently isolated, completely isolating high-frequency electromagnetic interference generated by high-power motors and frequency converters on site, eliminating signal drift, communication flash disconnection and random offline caused by ground potential differences of different equipment, suitable for strong magnetic field sites such as metallurgy and chemical plants.
Real-time full-link fault diagnosis enables rapid location of cross-bus communication abnormalities
It real-time monitors power supply, link connectivity and data transceiving status of each communication link as well as check errors. Panel LEDs provide visual alarms, and fault information is synchronously uploaded to the DCS system to generate event records. Maintenance staff can quickly distinguish faults on the controller side, gateway itself and third-party equipment bus, shortening downtime troubleshooting duration.
Independent communication processor does not occupy controller computing resources
The dedicated hardware processing chip independently completes all protocol parsing and data forwarding. Even with mass point interaction and parallel communication of multiple links, it will not increase the CPU load of the controller, ensuring real-time performance of system control logic and regulation loops.
Wide-temperature long-term stable operation adapts to special working conditions such as explosion-proof and marine environments
The hardware supports a wide temperature range of -25℃~+60℃ and has passed special certifications for explosion-proof and marine industries. It can be used in offshore platforms, chemical Zone2 explosion-proof areas and marine power control cabinets, supporting stable 24/7 continuous operation all year round.
Standardized controller slot design ensures compatibility for legacy system renovation
Unified backplane plug-in specifications allow original Advant and AC800M controllers to be directly equipped with NDCO-03 to expand multi-protocol communication capabilities without replacing main control hardware. Third-party equipment access renovation can be completed merely by adding communication configurations via engineering software with short plant shutdown time.
